ANNA TURBAU
DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
Anna Turbau (Barcelona, Spain, 1949–2025) was a photojournalist whose work was essential in documenting the social and political changes of Spain’s Transition to democracy. She is particularly recognised for her committed portrayal of Galicia in the 1970s, the struggles surrounding the Statute of Autonomy, and the conflicts linked to the AP-9 motorway. Her work, characterised by a powerful black-and-white documentary approach and a special focus on the role of women, is held in the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the documentary archive of the Consello da Cultura Galega, and the National Photography Collection of Catalonia.
In recent years, her work has gained renewed visibility within the international contemporary art context, with participation in ARCOmadrid and selection for Elles x Paris Photo, a programme dedicated to highlighting the contribution of women photographers to the history of the image within the international photography fair Paris Photo.
